Delight Changes Desire

Today I want to share with you a very simple truth, but hopefully one that will get you thinking.

Psalm 37:4- Delight yourself in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart.

When you read this verse you, like me, probably instantly skip your eyes to "he will give you the desires of your heart." If you do this then you are left with some very reasonable questions such as...

Why am I not getting what I want?

I have good news for you. The answer to this question is found in the first half of the verse. You will notice that the verse has a condition to it. In fact, the focus of this verse is not about receiving the desires of your heart, it is about delighting in the Lord. If, and only if, you delight yourself in the Lord, HE will give you the DESIRES of your HEART.

So lets break it down even more. If we delight in the Lord, what does that mean? It means we delight in what he delights in, in this context it means we want him MOST. If we delight in the Lord then he will change our hearts to desire what he desires. What he desires is what is best for you and his kingdom. What he desires is much bigger than earthly desires.

Finally HE will give us these new and pure desires. No one else will. He may use others but we will come to the knowledge and realization of HIS giving. Therefore we will thank HIM. Our gratitude will overflow for each moment despite what we feel.

Our body is not our own, may we delight in the maker of the universe. I don't know about you but I want the joy of Paul in my heart. That Joy, the joy of delighting in something bigger, was strong enough to pass through hell on earth unscathed. The joy of getting what I want is so pathetic and frail in comparison to that.
